PORPER – PAPE

I believe PAPE is a German surname, however, in at least one case, my ancestor, at the time living in Nova Scotia, Canada changed it to PORPER.  Wondering if anyone else is researching that name, where they originated from and where they might have moved to from Nova Scotia.  I do know some moved to Massachusetts, USA.
