CURTMAN, daniel

State:

Notes:
i find in the 1790 census a listing for a daniel curtman in york co penn. i am unable to tie his name to any in our family..i also find a molly curtman marrying charles lockwood in july 1850 elma, erie co. ny...thirdly there is a louis curtman who wrote a chemistry book in 1927 and louis and mildred curtman have set up a scholarship at ccny(i assume that to be city colledge new york))) many of the curtmans were lutheran pastors and i don't know if daniel is one one of them? the earliest curtman i find on the immigration records is george francis curtman...the immigration record says 1836 texas...but since he died in the texas war for independence in march of 1836 i suspect he was here earlier..george f died at the massacre of goliad and they have his last name kurtman..but his signature is curtman...he was born in 1810 and his brother henry who died at the alamo was born in 1808,,,they have his last name courtman even though he signed his name curtman..they were with breece's division of the new orleans greys which cme into texas in 1835....george f appears om the muster roll of burke as transferred from breece's co. (sometime i see it spelled breese)...neither is herman ehrenberg's name on breece's roll but he too is on burke's muster...ehrenberg escaped the massacre by running away and went back to germany where he wrote the definii=tive book..about the war...he did come back to the u s,...his book though widely quoted has never been published in the english language...there is a 1925 thesis of the translation at the alamo library......the bio of harbert davenport 1936 says george f was a german student who came to the new world as a result of revolution activities in the old...but does not give source material or references........my ancestor charles otto curtman came here in 1849 as a result of the revolution of 1848(they were trying to unify german into a nation with a central government)....charles otto's father's name wilhelm and he was born in 1802...his father johann heinrich was said to have ha d seven children and a step child(children),. i have not been able to find any links...johann,wilhelm, and charles otto all attended the university of giessen..while there is a long list of other curtmans attending that university i have not been able to link them...when charles otto came to the us he landed in ny and went to new orleans for a year and a half...whether there were other curtmans there or if george f and henry had left widows i don't know....i believe the answer to some question lies in the expedition of carl follen. he came with two ship loads of emmigrants and they were going to form a german colony complete with an university in the spanish speaking territory,,,the group fell apart and follen went to st louis....in looking for a passenger list for follen's expedition it is said to be unavailabe..and there is a question whether they landed in mobile ala or new orleans...i am told there were fires and the records were destroyed,,,they are said to have originated from the german port in bremmen...but i don't have the skills in german to see if that list is still with us.......and curiously last but not least i find a curtman in lancashire england in 1891,,,,possobly some od them were palatines....as they lived in darmstadt hessen..one lived in worms in the pfalz(palatine) one lived in baden in the baden province....wilhelm ended up teaching infreiburg as head of the seminary and that is baden wurttenberg....thanks for any help you might give..jim in san antonio
