Birth Record
Basics
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Every
recreational activity, whether it is a sport such
as golf or a hobby such as
genealogy, has certain
fundamental elements that must be understood
and
practiced. Without mastering these fundamentals, an
individual cannot
expect to have much success with
the activity.
When it comes to genealogy,
birth records...

Vital Records in the Past and
Future
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Vital
records—the certificates recorded in local or state
vital statistics
offices—have traditionally been the first
original records sought by
newcomers to family history
once they have exhausted home sources and
the
recollections of living relatives. Unfortunately, access
to these
records is becoming more and more restricted
at the very time when they have
become most
significant for...

How Far Should We
Go?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
After
my last column, which discussed what to do
with all the “maybes” (those folks
that don't quite fit
in the family tree yet), I got several responses
from
readers seeking answers to this basic question
--“How far should we
go?”

Five Tips to Save You Time and
Effort
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
One
of my friends has, I think, purchased every
organizational self-help book
that's been printed since
1980. He literally has a five-shelf bookcase of
them! Have
they helped him? Well, perhaps a bit. However, there
are
“extra” books stacked on the shelves in front of
those that are filed
vertically. His home office, too, is
in a state too. He no longer has stacks
of loose papers
in pile on the floor; he's now separated them by
subject
area and has placed them in plastic storage
bins with covers. There are
probably 12 or 15 of
those now stacked in his office. And so I would
say
that he is making progress. (By the way, this person
is not
me!)

They Became
Americans
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Citizenship
documents are eagerly sought after for
both their sentimental nature and the
important
information they hold. Yet, they can be difficult
to locate and
fully understand. Complex and
constantly changing naturalization laws
have
resulted in a great deal of confusion!

Free Census Extraction
Forms
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Census
extraction forms are doubly valuable: not only do they
allow researchers to
see the format and column headings for
various census years (especially if
the schedules themselves
are hard to read), they also provide a clean and
convenient
method for extracting and filing important information you
find.
