Locating Catholic Church Records in New Mexico. For those searching in church records in the southwest, you will be pleased to learn that the Catholic Church records are among the most complete and most thorough available. In New Mexico, however, two main factors create a challenge for researchers:

1) New Mexico's Catholic churches are governed by three entities: the Santa Fe Archdiocese, the Gallup Diocese, and the Las Cruces Diocese. Their records are all kept separately. In the Las Cruces Diocese most records are in the individual parishes. Some, but not all, have been microfilmed. [Where to look?]

2) Records are being microfilmed by three different groups: the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the Diocese of Gallup.
