Canada: New Castle and Johnston Districts - Census (1848-1850)

This data set contains information from the 1848 and 1850 head of household censuses of Upper Canada. These censuses exist for only three of the twenty districts that then comprised Upper Canada. These three districts are Huron, Johnstown, and Newcastle. This data set is an index to the returns of Johnstown and Newcastle districts. Information listed in this index includes the name of the head of household, the township, district, and/or province in Canada under which the individual is found in the census, the page number of the microfilm that he is found on, and the year of the census.

Census records are valuable sources for genealogists because they help us locate people in a specific time and place. The census records indexed here are located at the Family History Library (FHL) on microfilm rolls 1375918-1375920. Copies of these records may also be found at the National Archives of Canada, as well as many other genealogical societies, libraries, or provincial archives. Use the information gathered from this index to locate your ancestors on the microfilm rolls, which are copies of the original census records. It is important to do this because original records often contain more information than do their indexes. For instance, information contained on the 1881 census includes the name of each person in the household, along with their age, occupation, religious affiliation, birthplace, and father's origin or ethnic background. However, this index primarily only lists the head of households' names and tells you where you can find them in the original census records.
