Military pension records can provide a wealth of information about your ancestors. Pension files for Civil War veterans are often filled with details about the veteran and about his wife, and sometimes about his family members. Unfortunately, some genealogists don't investigate this research avenue as well as they should. There have been cases where, had I checked the military service and pension files early in my research, I could have saved myself many months and a great deal of frustration.
