I'm not sure where the practice started in my family (I know my grandmother on my mom's side did it), but I have found hidden papers under drawers, maybe because the space was flat, relatively large, and not easily disturbed.

I think the first time I found old papers was when I accidentally pulled a drawer out too far and it came out all of the way. I found some old newspaper clippings with the 'society' doings of the week in a small town in Minnesota. It was fun to read as it mentioned some relatives from Colorado that had been in town to visit. I later found some old pictures and school certificates.
